such as building information modelling (BIM), augmented and

virtual reality (AR/VR), laser scanning, robotics, 3D printing,

prefabrication.

The module is intended to enhance your skills and responses to new

and exciting digital technologies in the construction industry

exploring sustainability, 2D & 3D software, innovative

equipment/technologies, materials, and structures.

Each lecture will provide an overview of the topic under

consideration followed by group tutorials discussing/exploring the

topic further to provide an opportunity to enhance learning,

navigating research material and self-reflection.

The assessment will comprise of an illustrated ‘Portfolio Diary’ based

on the tasks listed below. The blank diary template will be provided

to you in week 1 in PowerPoint format – you are to record and write

a personal summary and response to the tasks listed below. The

responses to each task can be supported by any type of visual such

as sketches/doodles/spider diagrams and 300 words. As

professionals in the construction industry, you will soon understand

we, consultants use drawings, sketches and visuals to convey design,

space, materials, structure etc. With this in mind use

imagery/visuals to support your response to each task.

Each of the tasks in your portfolio diary should be clearly annotated

and clarity of your visual presentation is important. All material

should be referenced throughout if it’s not your own work. You are

to include your own research and observations demonstrating self-

study exploring the subject further. Research can include specific

case studies, literature/information from manufacturers websites,

articles from respectable newspapers, magazines, research

publications, books, journals etc provided in the lectures.

Tasks – 400 words for each task

1. Choose a digital technology that you use daily and explain

the benefits of that technology, consider the impacts without

this technology.

2. Choose 1 disruptive digital technology in the Built

environment and explain the potential and any constraints it

could bring to the future of the industry.

3. Consider one of the current discipline roles within the Built

Environment and discuss how digitalisation has been utilised

within that role.

4. What is BIM in the Built environment and why do we need

it?

5. Explain a Sustainability output that the built environment

industry currently employ.

6. Materials and Structure – compare and select 1 of 3 case

studies.

7. Revit – Consider 6 advantages and disadvantages of the

software and describe your own experiences using it as a

whole. Submit screen shots of your model demonstrating a

range of drawings and 3D visuals.

The Portfolio Diary is to comprise of an A4 word document –

landscape format with each page containing your student ID,

module description, Trimester 2 and the academic year

(2024/2025). The template in PowerPoint format will be provided to

you so you can populate the information yourself.

There are 7 tasks to perform. Each task is to be documented in the

Portfolio Diary.

Each task has a word limit of 400 words.

Support and feedback will be available throughout the module. The

focus of the tasks is documented below but these will be further

discussed in class allowing students to ask questions as required.

Each task will be allocated 10% of the marks.

Covid 19 and other health and safety considerations should adhere
